John (Jack) Blackmore was from a Glencoe farming family. He enlisted, aged 23, in March 1916 and was posted to the 43rd Australian Infantry Battalion. Embarked for England and attended Grenade School in Lyndhurst, where he trained in explosives. In France he was severely wounded on 4 July 1917 and died of wounds the next day.
