On 19 August 1944, the B-26 Marauder he was flying in was assigned to attack the fixed fortifications near Metz, France. As they came over the coastline, seconds away from their target, the aircraft suffered a direct hit from a flak gun on its open bomb bay, causing it to explode in mid-air with no survivors.
