Son of Henry and Margaret Cheney, of Prince's Road, Mitcham, South Australia.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 25 August 1914 and embarked from Adelaide for active service abroad as a Corporal with B Company, 10th Battalion on 20 October 1914 per HMAT "Ascanius" (A11). While serving with the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Sergeant on 6 May 1915 and after returning to Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion in February 1916. On 1 March 1916, he was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Warrant Officer Class 1 and went to France in June 1916. After being commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 26 August 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry at Mouquet Farm, France on 3/4 September 1916. Following promotion to Lieutenant (Lt) on 9 December 1916, he spent seven months with the 13th Training Battalion in England before rejoining the 50th Battalion in Belgium on 24 October 1917. He was mortally wounded in action on the Somme and died of his wounds at the 11th Casualty Clearing Station, France, aged 25 years.
