He was one of thirteen children who lived with their parents in the School House in the village of Great Waltham near Chelmsford Essex England. He and two of his brothers emigrated from England to Victoria Australia early in the twentieth century. His brothers were married but Charles was single so, when World War One began, he joined the Australian Imperial Force and went all the way back to Europe where he died in France. He was a school teacher in Victoria Australia when he joined up. His father was the local head teacher in the village school in Great Waltham and the organist in the local church. Charles was musical and had a good singing voice according to one of his fellow soldiers.
