Rudolf Henry Contance Mills, known as 'Harry', [aka Henry Sentance Mills] was born at Marton, New Zealand, on 23 February 1896 (reg. 1896/14711). His parents were George Alfred William Earl Mills (1842 -1912) and Agnes Kerr Mills (1860 -1921) who had married in New Zealand in 1882. His father, George, died on 10 October 1912. Harry joined the New Zealand Cyclist Battalion during World War I. He was killed in action in France on 23 July 1918 and buried in the Marfaux British Cemetery at Marne, France [IV. BB. 5.].
