Fatally Wounded Just Before Leave
Pte. Leo Smith, 24, who went overseas with the Calgary Highlanders, and later transferred to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, was fatally wounded in Italy a few days before he was expected to sail for Canada on leave.
He was wounded in action Jan. 14, and died the same day.
Pte. Smith was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Smith, 1610 Scotland St., and his wife, Mrs. Columba G. Smith, lives at 1117 5th Ave. W. with a five-year-old daughter, Sylvia.
Born in Russia, Pte. Smith came to Calgary with his parents when five years of age. He was educated at Sunalta and Central high schools. Before enlisting with the Calgary Highlanders in 1939, he was employed for a short time in the Premier laundry.
He leaves also a younger brother, Allen, and two sisters, Polly and Mrs. Mary Gofsky, at home. A short time ago, Pte. Smith had cabled home that he was due to receive leave and expected to be home for the first time in nearly five years.
