James Archibald Bourke was born around 1890 in Camperdown, Victoria. He was the son of John B. Bourke and Margaret Ellen Bourke (nee Smith) of 364 Lygon Street, East Brunswick. The Bourkes were former residents of Wallan. James was a butcher and served his four year apprenticeship with Thomas McKendrick at Wallan.
At the time of his enlistment James was working for T.J.Copeland, Butcher, of Kerang. The Kerang New Times notes that James was a member of the Presbyterian Choir.
In a letter from the front on 1 May 1915, John (Glady) O'Donnell wrote that James had been slightly wounded in the leg. He was killed in action at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli on the 5 July 1915, aged 25.
A memoriam service in connection with Jame's death was held in St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Kerang on the 8 August 1915.
