William served as a driver in the 1st Canadian Heavy Recovery Section. On the 5th of August 1943 he was cleaning out the fuse box of a truck with a petrol soaked rag. Suddenly he screamed: "Fire!" and flames were seen in the cabin of the truck. A tin right below the fuse box had caught fire and William tried to remove the tin. The flames enveloped and William tried to beat the flames out and rolled himself on the ground to smother the flames. With multiple burns he was rushed to a hospital in Scordia where he succumbed of his wounds on the 8th of August.
