Stewart was part of D-Company, 17th Platoon of the RCR. He was mortally wounded on the 24th of July by mortar fragments. His left abdomen and liver were penetrated, but he managed to walk for a mile to get himself in safety. He died a day later and was buried near Leonforte.
Stewart left his parents, one brother and three sisters behind. His father was invalid, so he was the one working on the farm together with his brother. His sister Helen served in the CWAC.
