Succumbs at 77

Gustav E. Anderson, 77, 4711 Aspen Ln., prominent amateur photographer and specialist in snow studies, died of cancer Saturday at a Salt Lake nursing home.

Mr. Anderson was recipient of the top-ranking photographers award in 1938-39 from the American Annual Photographers Assn. and the world's top salon photographer award in 1940 for pictorial merit of prints hung by exibitors in 10 or more salons during the year.

He also received an international award from Popular Photography in 1938 and first-prize awards at the Iowa State Fair, the Mineola, Iowa Fair — and most recently at the Salt Lake County Fair. His pictures were displayed in London, Budapest, Brussells, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, New York and Boston.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1897, in Stockholm, Sweden, a son of Emmanuel and Maria Anderson. On Feb. 18, 1927, he married Janet Knee in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mr. Anderson's works were displayed in several prominent magazines and newspapers including Life Magazine, the New York Times Magazine, New York Sun, New York Herald-Tribune and Chicago Daily News.

He is survived by bis wife; a daughter, Mrs. Douglas(Stella) Beckstead, Holladay; three grandchildren; a brother and two sisters, John, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, and Mrs. Karin Drotz, all of Sweden.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at 4760 S. State, where friends may call a half-hour before services. Burial will be at Murray City Cemetery.
