At the time of the Munich crisis, Michaels was in London and joined the Artists' Rifles with the rank of lieutenant. He specialized in tactics and mortars. Learning that the Royal Worcester Regiment was being sent to Palestine, he resigned his commission and re-enlisted in Nov 1938 as a private in the Worcesters. While in Palestine, his unit took part in putting down the Arab riots, and he won the Military Medal for bravery. On one occasion he was severely wounded. When World War II broke out, Michael's regiment was engaged in military operations in the East.
