US Congressman. Born in Darmstadt, Germany, he was educated at the University of Giessen and worked as a civil engineer assisting in railroad construction. In 1847, he immigrated to the United States, settled in San Antonio, Texas, where he opened a mill in 1850 and served as engineer for Texas railroad construction. He was a member of the Texas State House of Representatives, (1853-54) and served in the Texas State Senate (1859-61). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses and served until his death at age 55 in Washington, D.C.
