Raymond Victor Smith enlisted as a 17 year old moulder at Perth, Western Australia on 10th January, 1916. The son of Charles Henry Smith, Raymond had grey eyes and auburn hair. He joined the 48th Battalion in France on 21st July, 1916. Raymond was wounded on 12th August when he received a gun shot wound to the shoulder. After recovery, he rejoined his battalion on 25th August, 1916 only to enter hospital the next day with an ulcerated heel. On the 9th September he rejoined his Battalion, receiving a promotion to Lance Corporal a week later. Sadly, he was killed on the 7th January, 1917. Eye witnesses to his death state that he was in an observation at Flers Wood when he received a fatal shrapnel wound to the chest and abdomen. Lest We Forget.∼** ANZAC **
