James was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 ~ "Bar Fly" (#42-100248 ), while returning from a bombing run over Pforzheim, Germany, was hit by enemy flak and crashed near Reims, France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

He was interred, side by side, with three other members of his crew here at the Epinal American Cemetery. T/Sgt McCallen, 1st Lt. Robbins, and S/Sgt Speier, with a fourth member, S/Sgt Wojciechowski, interred several rows away.
