Charles served as a Staff Sergeant & Nose Gunner on B-24J "Bar Fly" #42-100248, 409th Bomber Squadron, 93th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Hennepin County, Minnesota prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 30, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles was "Killed In Action" when his B-24, while returning from a bombing run over Pforzheim, Germany, was hit by enemy flak and crashed near Reims, France during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Charles was interred, side by side, with four other members of his crew here at the Epinal American Cemetery. T/Sgt McCallen, 1st Lt. Robbins, S/Sgt Wojciechowski, and 1st Lt. Wagner.
