He was a sophomore when he enlisted in the service, December 12, 1942, at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He attended Cavalry, OCS, at Fort Riley, Kansas, and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, March 11, 1944.He was assigned to the 101st Cavalry Regiment.


December 21, 1943, the 101st Cavalry Regiment reorganized into the 101st & 116th Reconnaissance Squadron, 101st Cavalry Group. He was assigned to the 116th Reconnaissance Squadron, 101st Cavalry Group.


The 101st Cavalry Group shipped out for Europe, October 31, 1944, from New York Harbor, docking at Liverpool. England, November 13, 1944. In January 1945 the Group landed in France, and began combat operations, February 9, 1945.


On February 25, 1945 he was killed in action, by artillery fire, in Germany. 1sLieutenant Robert K. Schafer, 2nd Lieutenants Kupferschmidt and Sergeant Walter Mennel were also killed in this action.
