He took off from Metfield, England on a bomber support mission to Southern Germany. Last contact was 1220hrs in the Laon area, going down to strafe an airfield. Shot down by light flak and crashed at La Pigasse at Junincourt, France. Initially buried in the War Cemetery 1914-18 at Juvincourt.

1st Lieutenant Robert A. “Arthur” Newman, born 15 Nov 1921, was the son of Andrew Johnson and Velma (Arant) Newman of 305 West Humble Ave., Baytown, Harris County, Texas, Baytown is on the east side of the Houston metro area.

In the 1925 Beaumont, Texas, city directory, 4 year-old Arthur is living with his parents at 911 Prince Street. In the 1930 census 8 year-old Arthur is living with his parents, one older sister and one younger sister on Humble Avenue in Goose Creek, Harris County, Texas. His father is a laborer in an oil refinery. By the 1940 census 18 year-old Arthur is living with his parents and younger sister at 305 West Humble Ave., Goose Creek, Harris County, Texas. His father is a “shift breaker” in an oil refinery. Arthur is a porter for a mail order house.

Arthur enlisted 26 Dec 1941 in Houston as an aviation cadet. He’d had two years of college and was single without dependents.

The 353rd Fighter Group flew out of RAF Raydon, 67 miles northeast of London and 8 miles west southwest of Ipswich. RAF Raydon was originally built to be a B-17 bomber base.

Lt. Newman was shot down by flak during a strafing run on an airfield near Juvincourt, FR on the return from a bomber support mission to southern Germany on 16 Mar 1944 in P-47D Thunderbolt “Wham Bam” #42-75530. Killed in Action (KIA). MACR 3103. He left a wife, Mrs. Louise M. Newman, wife, 304 West Humble Ave., Goose Creek, Baytown, Texas.

The Courier-Gazette, McKinnney, Texas - 9 Oct 1944, Mon – TODAY’S WAR CASUALTIES – Washington. The War Department made public today the names of 1,527 United States soldiers killed in action. The announcement includes casualties in the Asiatic, Central Pacific, European, Mediterranean, and Southwest Pacific areas. The list included: European Area: Texas: Newman, 1st Lt. Robert A., Mrs. Louise M Newman, wife, 304 West Humble Ave., Goose Creek.
