Edwin served as a Private, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Seattle, King County, Washington prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 12, 1943 in Tacoma, Washington. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building transportation equipment and also as Single, without dependents.

Edwin was "Killed In Action" in Italy during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

His brother, Pvt Theodore H. Leland, was also "Killed In Action" during the war and is interred next to him (see photo to the right). They are one of fourteen pairs of brothers interred together in the Epinal American Cemetery, France.
