He was assigned as the tail gunner on a B-17F "Damn Yankee" which took off from Ridgewell, England with an assigned target of Leverkusen, Germany. Left formation over Belgium after fighters caused severe damage to the rear section of the aircraft. Five crew bailed out before aircraft nosed-down and crashed at Snellegem, six miles SW of Bruges, Belgium, at 1255hrs. The four crew who became POWs landed within a half mile radius of Ettelgem. 5 KIA 4 POW 1 Evaded.
