He was killed in the opening phase of the Battle of Hatten-Rittershoffen in Alsace,France. The was the second phase of what is known as the Battle of the Bulge. The first attacks launched in Belgium on 16 Dec 44 had the objective of the port of Antwerp. The second phase known as Operation North Wind by the Germans had the objective of recapturing Strasbourg. His unit was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for heroic participation in the battle fighting against the German 21st Panzer Division.
