1941, 02 Jul: Bruce Heflin (23) b. IA enlisted at Houston, Texas as a Private in the USAAF. He stated that he was single, weighed 129#, was 68" tall, and had 1 year of college.
It appears that Bruce was able to take pilots training and after OCS, became an officer, and was assigned to the 425th Night Fighter Squadron with the 9th Air Force, and was sent to France. They were either in Vannes or Prosnes, France.
1944, 27 Oct: 1st Lt. Bruce Heflin & his Flight Officer William B. "Bill" Broach, flying the "TABITHA" a Northrup P-61A-10-NO, Black Widow, were returning from a night recon mission looking for German trains. They found none. The report indicated that it was an unusually dark night, and upon final approach, Bruce wasn't aware that he was too low and just a tad too hot. His wing hit a small mound at the end of the runway, and they crashed. Neither survived.
His family rec'd his medals that he was due: An Air Medal & a Purple Heart.
