Howard served as a Sergeant, 66th Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Nassau County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on October 13, 1942 in New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Single, without dependents.

Howard was "Killed In Action" in the German offensive known as Operation North Wind which was launched on 1 Jan 1944 with the objective of taking Strasbourg. The battle occurred in the village of Herrlisheim in the north Alsace region. The Germans had established a bridgehead and the 12th Armored Division attempted to clear it. In bitter fighting against the 10th SS Panzer Division two battalions of US infantry were wiped out and the division suffered 1700 casualties total before they ultimately cleared the bridgehead.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Service Cross", Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.

(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Sergeant Howard F. Gumm (ASN: 32527944), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 66th Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 19 January 1945. Sergeant Gumm's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 12th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
