Norman served as a Private First Class, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Marshall County, Alabama prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 14, 1942 at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farmer and also as Single, without dependents.

Norman was "Killed In Action" in France during the war and was awarded the "Distinguished Service Cross" and the Purple Heart.

(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Private First Class Norman L. Cooley (ASN: 34331921), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 October 1944. Private First Class Cooley's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 79th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
