Son of Joseph W. Brown who resided in Plentywood, Montana.

Joseph served as a Staff Sergeant, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Sheridan County, Montana prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 19, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Missoula, Montana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" in France during the war and was awarded the "Distinguished Service Cross", Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart.

(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Joseph M. Brown (ASN: 39600293), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 August 1944. Staff Sergeant Brown's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
