Staff Sergeant Alvin E. Billingsley, born 6 Feb 1925, was the son of James Edward and Cora Jen (Kirgan) Billingsley of Hannibal, Missouri. Hannibal is on the Mississippi River 119 miles northwest of St. Louis. In the 1930 census 6-year-old Alvin is living with his parents and brother James 7 at 702 Vermont Street in Hannibal, Marion County, Mo. His father is a tractor operator for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. By the 1940 census 16-year-old Alvin is living with his parents and brother James 17 on Rural Route 3 in Mason, Marion County, Mo. His father is still a tractor operator for the CB & Q RR.
Sgt Billingsley was serving as the ball turret gunner on a B-17G 42-97097 which took off from Chelveston (65 miles NNW of London) with an assigned target of La Glacerie, France. Spun down and crashed due to flak. Crashed at 1830hrs at 'Signal de Sompuis', three miles east of Poivres, six miles east of Mailly-le-Camp, 19 miles south of Chalons-sur-Marne. Most of the survivors were blown out when the aircraft exploded. 6 KIA 4 POW.

Billingsley, is missing in action over France since April 27. S. Sgt Billingsley was a gunner on a Flying Fortress and had been awarded an air medal and an oak leaf cluster for meritorious conduct in action.
