Staff Sergeant William "Gil" Raymond Sultan, born 26 May 1923, was the son of William Michael and Catherine (McDonald) Sultan of East Northport, Long Island, Suffolk County, New York.

In the 1930 census 6-year-old William is living with his parents and siblings Frank 15, and Catherine 13, at 5281 69th Street in Queens. His father is a foreman for the sanitation department.

In the 1940 census 16-year-old William is living with his parents and sister Catherine and her husband Andy Milino and son Francis 7, at 584 Soundview Avenue in Huntington, Suffolk County, New York. His 63-year-old father is retired.

The 301st Bomb Group flew B-17s out of Lucera, Italy from 1 Feb 1944 through 1945. Lucera is 11 miles west northwest of Foggia and part of the massive Foggia network of air bases in southern Italy. Sgt Sultan was a waist gunner on B-17 44-6284 piloted by Lt Edward Simon.

On 3 Aug 1944 the 301st Bomb Group's mission was to bomb the Ober-Raderach Chemical Works at Friedrichshafen, Germany. Flak damaged 1st Lt. Edmond Simon's aircraft near the target. It was not until after bomb release that Simon feathered his number four propeller, and shortly thereafter his B-17 dropped back from the main formation, along with his two wingmen. Fifteen minutes later Simon's crew began jettisoning equipment as the pilot feathered the number two prop. The Fortress lost more airspeed and altitude before all ten men bailed out. Waist Gunner S/Sgt William "Gil" Sultan was killed, and all others were taken prisoner.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for New York show Sultan, William R, Sgt from Suffolk County as FOD (Finding of Death). A Finding of Death was determined at least one year and one day after a soldier, sailor, or airman went missing in action. His body would have been recovered later for burial at Florence.

William's father died 23 May 1944 so a tough year for Catherine.

Catholic War Veterans Post 153 in East Northport, Long Island, New York was named for Sgt William R Sultan.
