Husband of Marcella Shepard who resided in East Duluth, Minnesota.

John served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24J #42-109844, 514th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in St. Louis County, Minnesota prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 29, 1942 at San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a motormen.

B-24J #42-109844 took off from San Pancrazio, Italy on a bombing mission to Marsdorf, Germany. They were involved in a mid-air collision with B-24H #41-28951 over the Adriatic Sea north of Vieste, Italy. The cause of the collision is unknown.

John was declared "Missing In Action" in this collision during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
