Joseph served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24H #41-28951, 514th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Wood County, West Virginia prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Huntington, West Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of textiles and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24H #41-28951 took off from San Pancrazio, Italy on a bombing mission to Marsdorf, Germany. They were involved in a mid-air collision with B-24J #42-109844 over the Adriatic Sea north of Vieste, Italy. The cause of the collision is unknown.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in this collision during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
