Ted served as a Flight Officer in the Headquarters Squadron, XII Fighter Command, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He grew up in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, and as a young man was employed at the DuPont Experimental Station. According to a Delaware newspaper, he was a former member of the 198th Coast Artillery regiment (National Guard) which he joined in 1938. He enlisted in the Army on September 16, 1940, prior to the war. After serving in the South Pacific, he transferred to the Army Air Corps. It was reported in April 1941, that he was instructed to attend the 36th Coast Artillery Brigade intelligence school. On completion of his training/testing, and having achieved high marks, Ted was given the choice where he wanted to serve. In February 1944, he was appointed as a flight officer in the Army Air Force. He was on night patrol off the coast of Corsica July 20, 1944, and according to Delaware news "with a Black Widow night fighter group." He was declared "Missing In Action" Aug. 7, 1944, having been missing since the 20th, and then declared "Killed in Action" Sept. 14, 1944. He was awarded posthumously "for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as radar observer of a Beaufighter type aircraft," a Distinguished Flying Cross and then a Purple Heart. The citation read in part, "for outstanding proficiency in combat and steadfast devotion to duty."

Certificate signed by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt:
"In grateful memory of Flight Officer Theodore E. Hearne, who died in the service of his country in the North African Area, July 20, 1944. He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live, and grow, and increase its blessings. Freedom lives. And through it, he lives -- in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men."
