VINTON SOLDIER KILLED IN ITALY: SGT. RUSSELL GRAY WAS SERVING WITH U.S. RANGERS
Vinton, Ia.--Through a telegram received from the war department Mr. and Mrs. Clark W. Long of Vinton, have learned that Tech. Sgt. Russell L. Gray, 26, was killed in action in Italy May 21, 1944, while serving with the First special services force, consisting of American rangers and Canadian and British commandos of the Fifth army. He was reported missing June 12.
Sergeant Gray was wounded on the Anzio beachhead last February after being transferred there from the Aleutian islands last September. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Before entering the service in April, 1939, he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Long for six years.
Sergeant Gray was born at Waterloo Jan. 2, 1918, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gray, who now reside at Roswell, N.M. Also surviving are his wife and 15-month-old son, Russell Lester Jr., of Topeka, Kan., two brothers, Staff Sgt. Charles Gray, who has been across for two years and is stationed somewhere in West Africa, and Pvt. John Gray, Jr., who has been overseas two months.
Memorial services will be held Sunday at Prairie Creek church at 2:30, conducted by Rev. C. Breidenthal.
