Enlisted, December 9, 1940, in Troop C, 101st Cavalry Regiment, NYNG, Brooklyn, NY. He was federalized with the 101st Cavalry, January 27, 1941, for what was to be one year of service. The regiment was assigned to Fort Devens, MA, for training.

In the fall of 1941 the 101st Cavalry took part in the Carolina maneuvers. On the return convoy back to Fort Devens, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked and no one was going home in a year.

In April of 1942, the 101st Cavalry was ( half horse and half mechanized ) reorganized into a fully mechanized regiment. All of the horses were turn in to the Quartermaster Corp with great sadness.

He applied for and accepted as a Air Cadet and commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Army Air Corps, April 1, 1943, Midland Air Field, Texas. He was assigned as a bombadier to the 514th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group. Tunisia, Africa.

On October 5, 1943 his plane did not return from a bombing mission and he was reported missing.
