On January 20, 1945 he was on the crew of the B-24H Liberator #BU-UNKNOWN when they departed from their base in Venosa, Italy during a mission to bomb the marshalling yards at Linz, Austria.
They flew through intense flak as they approached their target area, however they made it through intact and in the air. Damage had been done to their aircraft and they developed engine trouble on their return trip over the Alps. Men were ordered to bail out while over the Adriatic Sea. They eventually crashed into the water off the coast of Yugoslavia.
The five crewman who perished were:
