Edward served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-24J #42-51642, 716th Bomber Squadron, 449th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 1, 1943 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Welder and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-51642 took off from Grottaglie Army Air Base, Italy on a bombing mission over the Isarc-Albes railroad bridge in northern Italy. After a successful bombing run B-24J #42-51642 had 2 engines damaged by ground anti-aircraft fire and they crashed near Lake Wiezen in Austria.

Edward was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

In 2015 the plane was found with possibly 3 remains still on board. One of the three was identified as Richard M. Horwitz in 2017.
