Cecil served as a Sergeant & Gunner on B-24J #42-109844, 514th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Shelby County, Tennessee prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 21, 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-109844 took off from San Pancrazio, Italy on a bombing mission to Marsdorf, Germany. They were involved in a mid-air collision with B-24H #41-28951 over the Adriatic Sea north of Vieste, Italy. The cause of the collision is unknown.

Cecil was declared "Missing In Action" in this collision during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
