Private First-Class Edward M Ashton, born in 1925, was the son of Malcolm Frank Ashton and Marion (Hyler) Ashton of Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey. Somerville is 27 miles west southwest of Newark.

In the 1930 census 4-year-old Edward is living with his mother and brother Leon 3, in the household of his maternal grandparents Chester and Cornelia Hyler at 24 Reimer street in Sommerville. His grandfather is the manager of a printing plant. His mother is a stenographer at an automobile dealer.
In the 1940 census 14-year-old Edward is living with his brother Leon 13, in the household of his maternal grandparents Chester and Cornelia Hyler at 24 Reimer street in Sommerville. Edward’s grandfather is a laborer for an asbestos company. Edward is a newspaper delivery boy.

Edward enlisted 27 Aug 1943 in Somerset County, New Jersey. He’d had 4 years of high school and was single without dependents. He was assigned to the 350th Infantry Regiment of the 88th Infantry Division. At the end of September 1944, the 88th Infantry Division was 4 miles south of Gesso in the Apennine Mountains of Italy.
