DOW 6-6-1944 as bombardier of B-24DSH / #42-63784 on a SOE (Special Operations Executive) secret 'Carpetbeggar' mission to the Belgium/Luxembourg border area on the night of 5/6 June 1944.
Shot down by a German night fighter the aircraft exploded in mid-air near Wavre, Belgium. Three men were blown out and the aircraft crashed at La Hulpe, 11 miles south-east of Brussels, Belgium. 6 KIA / 2 POW.
F/O Starkovich was one of the men blown out of the aircraft. Regrettably he was badly injured (spinal injuries) and he died on the operating table of the German Luftwaffe Hospital in Brussels

Starkovich had the rank of Flight Officer. Occupation or specialty was Bombardier. Service number was T-121795. Served with 801st Bomber Group, Heavy, 36th Bomber Squadron This occurred in or around Germany. Recorded circumstances attributed to: "Died as Prisoner of War under German control". His plane was brought down by flak and exploded. Flight Officer Starkovich was blown free of the ship. He died on the operating table that same night. He had spinal injuries.
