He resided in Wayne County, Michigan prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 9, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

James was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was attacked by multiple German FW 190's and crashed in Bad Doberan, Germany during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
