Kermit Iver Olstad served as a Staff Sargeant in the 547th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bomber Group in Belgium as a 22 year old. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.

A Flexible Gunner (FG) aboard a USAAF B-17 named "Jean" that on April 24, 1944 received a direct hit and crashed near Leustatten in Germany. They had been on their way to the Dornier aircraft factory in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich. Seven other crew members also perished. Two bailed out and became POW's.

Kermit Iver Olstad was born on January 23, 1922. He had three brothers and three sisters. He died on April 24, 1944, at the age of 22.
