As a young 21 year old man from Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, he enlisted into the Army Air Corp at Camp Lee in Richmond, Virginia on the 18 October 1941. He was killed serving in the 331st Bomber Squadron, 94th Bomber Group Heavy as a Staff Sergeant when his B-17 was downed by German fighter pilots over Stobbe, Holland, Netherlands on the 21 May 1943. I wittness accounts say the plane was hit by enemy fire then exploded before crashing to the ground. He was not married and was survived by his mother Annie Will Adams Loftis and several brothers and sisters.
