Robert served as a Technical Sergeant & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-17G #44-8426, 568th Bomber Squadron, 390th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 18, 1943 in Madison, Minnesota. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #44-8426 took off, with a crew of 9 plus " 7 other B-17's " from the 568th Bomber Squadron, from Framlingham, England on a bombing mission over Derben, Germany. The entire squadron was attacked by approximately 100 German fighter aircraft west of Berlin, Germany.

B-17G #44-8426 was shot down during this attack and crashed near Wachow, Germany. " 4 " members of the crew were lost and the other " 5 " became POW's of the German Army.

Note: The entire squadron of " 8 " B-17's with the 568th Bomber Squadron were lost in this attack.

Robert was "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
