Additional Info:

Voorhis H. Day is born about 1921 in the state of New York, USA; possibly in the town of Buffalo in Erie County, as that is where his parents and siblings are living for the 1920 U.S. census and the 1925 New York state census.

Voorhis grew up in Buffalo, New York, and graduated from Bennett High School. In August 1939, Voorhis enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps at his local recruiting station and was selected to study airplane mechanics at the Air Corps Technical School, Roosevelt Field, Mineola, Long Island, New York. Upon graduation, Voorhis was a first-class private and was assigned to the 18th Reconnaissance Squadron, Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York, as a specialized air mechanic. Private Day enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in October 1941.

About December 1941, Private Day completed his basic flying course and graduated at Perrin Field, Texas, as an aviation cadet. Soon after, he was sent to advanced flying school to be in the first basic flying class to be activated after the declaration of war. Cadet Day was in Aviation Cadet Class 42D, the first class to receive this training at the new Air Corps Basic Flying School at Sherman, Texas, while in the Aviation Cadet Battalion. While there, Voorhis was appointed a lieutenant and was designated the battalion's supply officer. Upon completing training at Ellington Field, Texas, at the Air Corps advanced training center, the world's largest multi-motor flying school at that time, Voorhis graduated on April 29, 1942, as a pilot and was commissioned a second lieutenant.

On June 6, 1942, in the chapel on Mitchel Air Force Base, aka Mitchel Field, on Long Island, New York, Lieut. Day married Miss June Louise Zimmerman, daughter of Frederick G. and Rosa Zimmerman Jr.. One of their attendants was Voorhis' sister, Beatrice (Mrs. Louis) Fritz.

In October 1942, Voorhis was promoted to first lieutenant.

In September 1943, the U.S. War Department confirmed First Lieut. Day was missing in action. In February 1944, the U.S. War Department confirmed that on August 17, 1943, First Lieut. Voorhis H. Day, 22, was killed in action. First Lieut. Voorhis H. Day was flying a Thunderbolt pursuit plane over Belgium on his 35th or 36th combat mission, depending upon the source.
