Norman served as a Second Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-17G #42-107132, 601st Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in McCook County, South Dakota and was a member of the South Dakota National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on February 10, 1941, prior to the war, from Rapid City, South Dakota. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Norman was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, while on a mission to bomb Berlin, was shot down by German Aircraft and crashed in Biesenthal, nine miles southwest of Eberswalde, Germany during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
