Cora Lee Bentley Radcliffe, of 102 Clayton Road, East Hartford, passed away on Tuesday (August 3, 2010) at Hartford Hospital while surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Tallahassee, FL to the late Carrie Jones and Arnold Bentley, she was raised in a large family that included fifteen brothers and sisters.

Cora Lee graduated with a B.A. in Physical Education from Florida A&M University excelling in track and field and winning many awards. Upon moving to Hartford, she became a faithful member of Union Baptist Church who enjoyed singing in the choir.

She received her master's degree in Special Education from the University of Hartford. Thus began her thirty-plus year long career in serving the needs of mentally challenged children in the Hartford Schools.

A mentor who created programs for the mentally challenged youth of the North end at the Jewish Community Center on Prospect Street, Cora Lee was the founder of the first black female basketball and softball team through the Independent Social Center (the Tigerettes) winning the eastern regional championship their first season!

A founding member of the Hartford Chapter of the Florida A&M University Alumni group, and a member of the Business and Professional Women, she helped steer the Women's League towards early childhood education in the 40s. Cora Lee lived a tremendous life filled with character and strength and although she is gone from our sight, her flame continues to burn in our hearts.

Our dear Cora Lee is mourned and loved by her devoted daughter, Claudia Radcliffe Rose; a cherished son, Billy; two adored grandchildren; and a precious great-grandchild. Cora Lee was predeceased by her faithful husband, Claude Vincent Radcliffe, and fifteen siblings.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010 in Hopewell Baptist Church, 280 Windsor Avenue, Windsor, CT, with interment following in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor.
