Second Lieutenant Phillips Abbott Jr., born 4 Jun 1922, was the son of Phillips and Frances (Brimberry) Abbott of Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia. Louisville is 23 mi SW of Augusta.


In the 1930 census 8-year-old Phillips is living with his parents and siblings Frances 11, and William 6, in Louisville. His father runs a furniture store.


In the 1940 census 18-year-old Phillips is living with his parents and siblings Frances 21, and William 16, at 803 Mulberry in Louisville. His father is a cashier at the 1st National Bank.


2nd Lt Phillips Abbott, Jr., was pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-75412. On 13 Jul 1944 Phillips took off from A-1 at St-Pierre-du-Mont on a mission over Tours. He was flying in the no.4 spot in Blue Section.


The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Georgia show Abbott, Phillips Jr, 2Lt from Jefferson County as killed in action 13 Jul 1944. Phillips' plane was hit by flak over Tresson. Tresson is 20 mi ESE of Le Mans and 117 mi SW of Paris. According to 2nd Lt Herbert G. Stewart, Abbott was hit by flak, and he bailed out at 1600 feet but his parachute did not open in time and he plummeted to his death. The town square in Tresson is named in honor of Phillips.

A cenotaph marker in memory of Phillips was placed at the Louisville City Cemetery in the Abbott family plot.
