Merle served as a Private First Class, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Uinta County, Wyoming prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 20, 1943. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

Merle was "Killed In Action" in the Battle for Brest, France during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Merle also has a "cenotaph" in the Evanston City Cemetery, Evanston, Wyoming.
