On December 5, 1943 the 389th BG set out against Cognac, France. Poor weather forced the group to bomb St. Nazaire instead. Over the secondary target,
THE OKLAHOMAN was hit by flak and came apart. One man, Lt. Harley Mason of the 566th BS, survived.

Tech Sergent Mcnair was a recipient of the Distinguished flying cross for his participation in the Ploesti raid "Operation Tidal Wave" flying as radio Operator with Lt Conroy's crew August 1st 1943. One of the most daring raids of WW2. Coming in at tree top level the Sky Scorpions destroy the Steaua Romana oil refinery. The refinery does not produce oil for six months.
