Wayne served as a Technical Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17 (#42-29838), 509th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cortland County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 12, 1942 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

Wayne was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, while on a mission to the Submarine Pens & Docks in St Nazaire, France, was shot down and crashed in France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
