Son of Graham Hampton Atkins who resided in Liberty, North Carolina.

James served as a Private, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Prince George's County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 8, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm hand and also as Single, without dependents.

James was "Killed In Action" in France during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
