Thomas, who resided in Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Private with a Paratroop Unit, U.S. Army during World War II. He was a graduate of The Parachute School and was en route to Europe, assigned to a replacement detachment, Group 155(A), Platoon A, Infantry, Unassigned.

He enlisted in the Army on July 3, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted as being Married and as a white citizen.

Thomas was a passenger on the U.S.A.T. J. W. McAndrew when, during a storm, they collided with the French aircraft carrier Béarn which had lost it's power.

Thomas was declared " 1 " of " 69 " that went "Missing In Action" during this collision with the Bearn near the Azores during the war.

He had served in the Army for eight months at the time of his death.

Thomas also has a "Cenotaph" in the East New Market Cemetery, East New Market, Maryland.
