Grave-Civil War CSA Military Marker
In the conflict between the states in 1836, he, being a mere youth, not seventeen years old, joined Conpany A, Twelfth Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry(Major Frank Phipps Company of TN Volunteers) and remained with this command until Lee's surrender in April 1865. His comrades say there was no better soldier than he. After the war he came back to his father's at Church Hill and remained a member of his house till on Feb 14, 1867, he was united in marriage to Amanda Caroline Flanagan. Then it was that he began to establish and found a home of his own. To this union were born eleven children, all living except one son, James was killed by a train in Texas. He was converted and lived an exemplary Christian life for nearly fifty years. He was a very industrious man and by his industry and business judgement "made a good living" and leaves his widow, who is an invalid, well provided for. He was a man well liked by his fellow men and was punctual in meeting his obligations. His promise given to-day held forever afterwards. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and back in the old days was "class leader,"steward, trustee and in fact was already ready to do his duty as he saw it. He wa a man slow to criticize but very quick to take a positive stand on all questions of reform. He was progressive in both spirit and action. He believed in churches, better schools and a higher and better standard of a Christian living. Fiends and loved ones will do well to emulate his life. Peace to his ashes.
